Leighton was appointed senior registrar at Llandough Hospital, Cardiff, and then consultant in general surgery at Neath General Hospital, where he contributed to the training of many surgeons and nurses. He remained there until he retired in 1980. Leighton believed that the surgeon's greatest skill was knowing when not to operate. He loved to travel, and it was when he was returning from Majorca that he had a cerebral haemorrhage; he was never to stand or walk again. He leaves a wife, Megan; three sons; and six grandchildren.
