BACKGROUND: Pediatric brain tumor survivors frequently have a decreased cognitive function, poor educational outcomes and academic. We investigated adaptive behavior in children with low-grade glioma (LGG) compared to healthy controls and a norm population. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a cross-sectional study at the department of pediatric oncology of two Dutch university hospitals adaptive behavior was analyzed in children with LGG and healthy family controls. Responses from parents of 50 out of 90 LGG patients (median 12.08 years; 52% male) were compared with 40 healthy family controls (median 11.03 years, 42.5% male) and a U.S. norm population. The Parent/Caregiver Rating Form of the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales-II was used considering four domains and subdomains. RESULTS: Impaired adaptive behavior was present in the LGG-group compared to the controlgroup. The VABS-II domain most affected was the Motor Skills (p < 0.01) most clearly gross motor skills, followed by the Communication (p < 0.05) most clearly writing and Socialization (p < 0.05) most clearly play&leisure time. The LGG-group performed below the norm population on the Written, Domestic en Gross motor skills subdomains, while exceeding the norm on Coping Skills and Fine motor skills. Notable that the control-group exceeded the norm population on 10 out of 15 VABS-II (sub)domains. Exploratory multiple regression analysis identified younger age at diagnosis as risk factor for impaired Motor skills (â = 0.518, p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Children with LGG have impaired adaptive behavior relative to the controls, most prevalent regarding motor skills. Earlier identification of impaired adaptive behavior could be helpful to customize rehabilitation
