Error in reference list numbering.
The reference lists contains 45 references, although only 44 appear in the body of the text. The misnumbering starts with the addition of reference 23 which reports the R statistical program used. Reference 23 should have been a footnote “e” instead of a reference for the last sentence in the Statistical Analysis paragraph in the Material and Methods section (page 1474 of PDF).
References 24 through 45 are 1 number off to the references in the article. That is, reference 23 in the body of the article matches with reference 24 in the reference list, and so on, ending with reference 44 in the body of the article matching up with reference 45 in the reference list.
