The third edition of this comprehensive and clinically oriented textbook comes after a gap of six years with several important improvements aiming to provide a concise and consistent presentation of the basic principles essential to the modern practice of anaesthesia. The book has 50 chapters, and has introduced sections such as Key Concepts which help the reader to focus on truly important themes that constitute the core of understanding anaesthesiology. Case discussions at the end of each chapter deal with clinical problems of current interest and provide a methodology and frame work to approach viva voice. Profiles in anaesthetic practice is the truly unique and exciting feature of this edition where in 11 internationally recognized leaders in anaesthesiology present editorialized counter points to the usual textbook dogma. While terms like “neuronavigation,” “laryngo spasm notch” involve the readers in the dynamics of thinking through anaesthetic problems and controversies, it is the refreshing frankness of John Mayers commenting on the disadvantages of the much flouted bispectral index – “I once applied bispectral index electrodes to a serving of cherry gelatin with fruit cocktail from our cafeteria and recorded a bispectral index value of 22”, this once again reiterates that clinical observation and judgement in concert with sophisticated monitoring provides a fuller and more accurate assessment of patient responsiveness to anaesthesia. Diagrams in this book are easy on the eye and it has but a couple of X-ray plates only. The suggested reading at the end of each chapter includes relevant texts, chapters and review articles emphasizing material published in 1990's. A very useful compliment to the standard text books in vogue, of much help to the practising physicians and anaesthcsiologist. This book is recommended for all post graduates and practising anaesthesiologists.
