Former general practitioner Willesborough, Kent, and consultant in environmental medicine St Bartholomew's Hospital, London (b 1932; q Cambridge/Guy's Hospital, London, 1957; MD, MRCOG), died from secondary prostate cancer on 25 May 2004.
After house jobs Tim spent three years in Uganda; after his return he elected to go into general practice. Some years later he joined the consultant staff at St Bartholomew's Hospital, and developed the teaching of community medicine. An unconventional consultant, he cycled to work and dressed informally. His later years were spent in Africa, notably in Malawi, where he established a department of community medicine in a new medical school. After his official retirement he was involved in charitable projects in the control of tuberculosis in Siberia and Georgia. He leaves a wife; five children; and 17 grandchildren.
