In the February 2012 issue of Thyroid (vol. 22, no. 2; 109–111), the commentary “History of the Clinical Endocrinology Branch of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases: Impact on Understanding and Treatment of Diseases of the Thyroid Gland” by Gershengorn (1) requires correction. On page 109, lithium ion was mistakenly described as an inhibitor of iodide uptake by the thyroid. The correct statement is: “A related finding by Drs. Wolff and Robbins was that lithium ion was an inhibitor of iodide release by the thyroid.”
The author sincerely regrets this error.
