Former consultant cardiologist Southern General Hospital, Glasgow (b London 1930; q The London Hospital 1954; FRCP), died from lung cancer on 25 October 2003.

After registration John served for two years in the Royal Army Medical Corps and served in Malaysia, where he was mentioned in dispatches. Further junior posts at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, followed before he returned to The London Hospital. He began his career in cardiology at the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, before returning to The London Hospital for a further seven years. He became a consultant cardiologist at the Southern General Hospital in 1967. John was latterly consultant in charge of the coronary care unit, retiring in 1995. He leaves a wife, Margaret; three children; and two grandchildren.
