Former general practitioner Sittingbourne, Kent (b Gillingham 1915; q St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, 1940), died from biliary peritonitis on 26 May 2004.

Raymond Birch's qualification in 1940 was delayed by tuberculosis and he spent the second world war as a general practitioner near Sittingbourne and as medical officer to the Home Guard. He was a founder member of the Royal College of General Practitioners, an honorary surgeon to the British Fire Services Association, a medical officer to the British Red Cross Society, and a liveryman of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries. In retirement he became a guide at Leeds Castle. Predeceased by his wife, Diana, he leaves two daughters and three grandchildren.
