As senior medical officer at the Department of Health, Mike combined his clinical expertise and professional values with the highest standards of public service, serving successive ministers of different political parties over 16 years. He made a real difference in areas as diverse as HIV, emergency care, thrombolysis, intensive care, surgery, anaesthetics, and drugs safety. Mike was also a private secretary to former chief medical officer Sir Ken Calman. Mike's decision last year to volunteer to go to Baghdad to help rebuild the health service in Iraq was typical of his spirit of public service.
