Consultant orthopaedic surgeon Glasgow Royal Infirmary (b Liverpool 1948; q Edinburgh 1972; MD, FRCS Ed, FRCS Glas), died from intestinal cancer on 10 August 2004.

Ian did his specialist training in orthopaedic surgery in Scotland and spent the rest of his career in Glasgow. He followed an academic route, commencing as a research fellow at the Western Infirmary to study gait analysis of the hip in collaboration with bioengineers at Strathclyde University. He was appointed lecturer and then became consultant senior lecturer in the university department in 1983. His special interest in surgery of the shoulder joint led to increasing national and international recognition. In 1989 he crossed the city to take up an NHS consultant post at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Ian enjoyed Scottish country dancing and became an accomplished bagpiper. He leaves a wife, Helen, and four children.
