Director general of the Royal Air Force Medical Services and consultant in occupational medicine (b Lancaster 1942; q St George's 1967; MSc), died on 7 January 2004 from a brain tumour.

Christopher Sharples served for 39 years as a Royal Air Force medical officer. He joined the RAF Medical Branch in 1963, serving in Gibraltar, the United States, Cyprus, and Britain. Postgraduate study at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine was followed by his appointment as a consultant in occupational medicine. He was promoted to the rank of air vice marshal in February 1997. In 1995 he was appointed honorary physician to the Queen. He was awarded the Cade medal by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1979 and was admitted as an officer brother to the Order of St John in 1997, followed by promotion to commander in 1999. He leaves a wife, Barbara; two children; and two grandchildren.
