Matthew was an expert in difficult vaginal delivery before caesarean section became as popular and safe as it is today. He was interested in boats and was a founder member of the Clyde River Steamer Club. After retirement he was for 10 years a guide at the famous Burrell Collection, where his particular interest was the stained glass. He leaves a wife, Margery; four children; and nine grandchildren.
