Ivan joined a central (“university”) practice in 1969 after 10 years as a general practitioner in Weston-super-Mare. His earlier career had been interrupted by lymph node tuberculosis, which in turn made him ineligible for national service. Besides an extensive practice in the academic community and beyond, he was for some 10 years a clinical assistant at the Rosie Maternity Hospital in Cambridge, a period that fuelled his interest in obstetrics. He was also one of the early MAGPAS (Mid-Anglia General Practitioner Accident Service) doctors. He was a skilled bagpipe player. He leaves a wife, Bodil; four children; and eight grandchildren.
