Former district community physician Hartlepool (b Newton Stewart 1921; q Edinburgh 1944; FFPH, DPH), died from cardiac failure on 19 November 2004.
Tony served with the King's African Rifles in east Africa and India before undertaking postgraduate studies in public health. After posts in Yorkshire and Walsall, in 1958 he was appointed medical officer of health for Hartlepool, later becoming district community physician. He retired in 1986. In Hartlepool he led the development of housing provision for elderly people. He was also involved in the training and introduction of health visiting and district nursing services. Tony was an active member of Hartlepool Rotary Club for 44 years. He leaves two sons.
