Dr. KP Srivastava

Dr. KP Srivastava was born at Gorakhpur on 5th April, 1935 He did his graduation (MBBS) and postgraduation i.e., MS (Gen Surgery) from SN Medical College, Agra. His interest in orthopaedics and trauma care took him to GSVM Medical College, Kanpur where he did his MS (Ortho) under the legendary Prof. AK Gupta. He joined the Department of Orthopaedics, SN Medical College, Agra as a lecturer in 1968. He became Professor Head of department in Orthopaedics in 1983. Later after his retirement he worked as Professor Emeritus.

He was one of the visionary orthopaedician and was instrumental in the formation of Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA) as a separate entity from Association of Surgeons of India (ASI).

At his initiation, UP Chapter of IOA was formed in 1977 and Agra Orthopaedic Society in 1979 which happens to be one of the first city chapter in North India. He rendered extra ordinary contributions to these organizations at the City, State and National levels. He served Uttar Pradesh Orthopaedic Association (UPOA) as treasurer, secretary for six years and as President in 1986. He was President of Agra Orthopaedic Society (AOS) from 1983 to 1997 and was elected to the post of President of IOA in 1997. He was member of working committee of Association of Orthopaedic Surgeon of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries during the inaugural conference at Kathmandu, Nepal in 1988.

He was very active academician and excellent teacher. He received J and J Fellowship in 1972, AA Mehta Gold Medal in 1978, Foreign Fellowship Award to USA in 1989 and FNAMS in 1990. He was the proud recipient of Dr. BC Roy National Award in 1991 as an eminent teacher.

He was conferred with UP Rattan by His Excellency, the Governor of UP, in 2001. During his tenure as President IOA, he was instrumental in starting of Trauma Committee, PG Teaching Committee and Centre State Relationship Committee and restarting of Hand Society. He started the Journal of Bone & Joint Diseases, an official publication of UPOA. IOA has best Poster Presentation Medal in his name. UP Orthopaedic Association has an Oration in his name, which is delivered by the past President of IOA and the best Ortho Club of the State Trophy in his name. Besides being an excellent academician and organizer, he had been the inspiration and the driving force for free operations of Post Polio & Cerebral Palsy Deformities ever since his retirement in 1993. The Govt. of India conferred upon him a national award for services to the handicapped in 2001. He was associated with several NGOs of Agra and in State for his philanthropic work for rehabilitation.

He left for his heavenly abode on 4th of April 2017 at the age of 82. He is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.

His legacy will be carried forward by his son Dr. Atul Srivastava and his students.
