Former general practitioner Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, and Grosmont, Monmouthshire (b Mottram in Longendale 1920; q The London Hospital 1943; MRCP), died from prostate cancer on 20 September 2004.

After initial appointments at The London and Harold Wood hospitals, Steven served in the Royal Army Medical Corps at Ipoh in Malaya during the insurgency. On his return he joined the North Brink practice in Wisbech at the inception of the NHS. He remained there until 1975, when he joined a rural practice at Grosmont in the Welsh Marches. He retired in 1983. He was a noted local historian and restored keyboard instruments, including a barrel organ. He continued to write articles and play music to the end, despite painful disability. He leaves a wife, Whinifred, and three sons.
