General practitioner Haywards Heath 1950-91 (b Southampton 1923; q The London Hospital 1946; DRCOG, FRCGP, MBE), died from duodenal cancer on 2 November 2004.

John was a principal in general practice for four decades. In the late 1960s he recognised the need for structured training for new general practitioners and played a key role in setting up Cuckfield (Mid Sussex) Vocational Training Scheme, one of three in the country at that time. John was also involved in the development of two local hospices and was a tireless fundraiser. In 1986 he attended a course in palliative care, later undertaking locums in this specialty. He was a divisional officer for the Red Cross and was medical officer of the local branch of the Royal British Legion. He leaves a wife, Sue; three children; and eight grandchildren.
