Telomere length and cellular ageing. Telomere shortening-mediated cell arrest occurs in somatic cells proliferating for a few cycles (M1). Non-arrested cells undergo progressive telomere shortening and die by apoptosis at M2. Cells that have a mutated apoptotic checkpoint encounter death due to massive genomic instability.
