Lionel, or “Lee,” contracted tuberculosis as a medical student and spent two years learning to breathe and walk again, before resuming his studies and qualifying. As well as building up a busy postwar practice, he did clinical assistantships in emergency medicine, cytology, and microbiology at the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals. A practical first aider, he regularly did exercises with St John Ambulance, including “All Heave Together” in 1961—an operation to mobilise various organisations for the provision of advanced medical services in the event of a nuclear war. In 1980 he left general practice to become chief medical officer to GKN plc. He leaves a wife, Mavis, and three children.
