After house jobs Paul did a short service commission for three years, serving in Cyprus and Africa in the British Somaliland Scouts. He then did further hospital jobs in Manchester and Hull before becoming a general practitioner in Henfield, West Sussex. He stayed in Henfield until his early retirement in 1988, following a heart attack during a Saturday morning surgery. He also worked as a clinical assistant at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton. He leaves a wife, Margaret; two children; and three grandchildren.
