Nutrition Science directly effects peoples’ well being but still there is a paucity of authoritative and scientifically backed books on the subject by Indian authors specifically focussing on the needs of the Indians. The text book of Human Nutrition, edited by eminent nutrition scientists from the National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad has been published at an appropriate juncture when there is a revival of interest in the role of nutrition in health and disease. The initial chapter on expanding frontiers of nutritional science has been appropriately authored by Dr C Gopalan. The section on chemistry and metabolism is followed by those devoted to assessment of nutrition status and RDAs, Functional significance of nutrition, nutritional deficiency disorders, diet, nutrition and degenerative diseases, food toxicities and reaching nutrients to the community. Each chapter has a prefactory synopsis with latest references as suggested reading at the end. The contents of the book and its comprehensiveness makes it a good reference and text-book for all students of nutrition including research and planners providing basic material in the Indian setting. Recommended for all students and teachers of the subject of Nutrition.
