Peter came to work in the General Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, as a senior house officer in 1963, soon being promoted to a registrarship, and subsequently holding a research appointment for work on muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular diseases. He became a skilled electron microscopist and developed a major interest in skeletal muscle pathology. These interests continued after his appointment as a senior lecturer/consultant in the department of neurology of Newcastle University. He was a keen sportsman and he spent several years as a major in the Royal Army Medical Corps.
