Consultant physician James Paget Hospital, Gorleston, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk 1981-94 (b Portsmouth 1945; q Westminster Hospital 1970; BSc, FRCP), died from hepatorenal failure on 14 February 2005.

Stuart joined the medical registrar rotation at St James's Hospital, Leeds, and then moved to East Anglia, where he was a senior registrar in gastroenterology. In 1981 he was appointed the first consultant gastroenterologist at the newly commissioned James Paget Hospital in Norfolk, where he founded and developed a thriving department of gastroenterology. He was a sparkling and witty companion. Soon, however, a depressive illness, which had first shown itself while he was a senior registrar, took hold. He retired in 1994. He leaves a wife, Jenny, and a son.
