Joe's career began at Belfast Royal Victoria Hospital. He then joined the Colonial Service in Kenya as a state pathologist (where he slept with a revolver under his pillow). In 1956 he became a consultant pathologist in Lurgan, and he built up the laboratory service in Lurgan and the Southern Area, the blood bank, and haematology. He once closed an entire hospital during an outbreak of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus. He chaired several committees and was a founder member of the Royal College of Pathologists. Predeceased by his first wife, Phyllis, he leaves his second wife, Patricia.
