Consultant histopathologist Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and honorary professor of pathology University of Birmingham (b 1951; q Cambridge 1974; MD, FRCPath, MRCP), died suddenly from cardiogenic shock on 5 December 2004.

After house jobs in Hull John trained as a pathologist in Birmingham, combining routine diagnostic work with teaching, research, and writing. He was appointed as a consultant at Heartlands Hospital in 1983. He had special expertise in lymphoma pathology and worked to develop techniques to increase diagnostic precision. With David Burnett, he founded and for eight years edited Molecular Pathology. He published widely and edited several books. He was a key mover in establishing the molecular diagnostic facility at Heartlands. John had a huge range of interests, including music, geology, literature, photography, cosmology, and fireworks. He leaves a wife and son.
