Ruth did house jobs at the Ulster Hospital, Dundonald, before moving into general practice. In 1999 she became a partner in Kerrsland Surgery, east Belfast, where she continued to work until the day she was diagnosed as having acute myeloid leukaemia. Ruth was a committed Christian. She was an active member of her local church, where she was involved with young people's work and in the support of missionaries. She leaves a husband, Jim.
