Biophysics. In the article “Membrane permeabilization by Listeria monocytogenes phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C is independent of phospholipid hydrolysis and cooperative with listeriolysin O” by Howard Goldfine, Christopher Knob, Dennis Alford, and Joe Bentz, which appeared in number 7, March 28, 1995, of Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA (92, 2979–2983), the authors wish to retract the data showing that the phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC) is capable of permeabilizing membranes consisting of phosphatidylcholine and cholesterol, and that it cooperates with listeriolysin O in this activity. With similar preparations of PI-PLC, the authors have separated the PI-PLC activity from the permeabilizing activity by hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The latter activity in these preparations comigrated with listeriolysin O.
