White colony formation increases in strains with dysfunctional telomeres. Diluted cell suspensions of 7B520 and its derivatives, ter1-Δ, stn1-M1, stn1-M1 ter1-Δ, and ter1-28C(Taq) were spread on solid YPD medium containing 0.02% X-gal and scored for color. Shown are representative dilution plates with examples of white colonies in each strain, except 7B520, in which a white colony was never observed.
