He studied internal medicine at Kurnool Medical College, obtaining a master’s degree from Madras Medical College and a DM in gastroenterology from Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. He was subsequently a professor of gastroenterology in Andhra Pradesh Health Sciences before setting up the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology, a tertiary care gastrointestinal specialties hospital.
Dr Reddy’s main area of research interest has been GI endoscopy, particularly in therapeutic pancreaticobiliary endoscopy and innovations in transgastric endoscopic surgery. He has published more than 416 articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals, has contributed chapters to 7 international gastroenterology textbooks, and has edited 3 GI endoscopy textbooks. He is on the international editorial board of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the editorial boards of Digestive Endoscopy, World Journal of Gastroenterology, World Gastroenterology News, Gastroenterology Today, The Journal of Chinese Clinical Medicine, Recent Patents on Medical Imaging, Indian Journal of Gastroenterology, and Gastro-Hep.com. He is a peer reviewer for journals like Lancet, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Endoscopy, World Journal of Gastroenterology, Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and Indian Journal of Gastroenterology. He was the president of the Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India in 2001. He has been a visiting faculty member for 112 international endoscopy workshops and a forum member of the Asian Endoscopy Masters Forum.
Dr Reddy has been recognized for his achievements by several societies. He received the Dr B. C. Roy Award from the Indian Medical Council in 1995 and the Padma Shri Award from the government of India in 2002. He was elected as an honorary member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) in 2004, a fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (New Delhi) in 2001, a fellow of the Philippines Society of Gastroenterology in 2001, and a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 2003, and he was a recipient of an honorary Doctor of Science (DSC) from Nagarjuna University in 2005. He has given several named orations, including the Francisco Roman Oration of the Philippines Society of Gastroenterology in 2002, the Dr Panner Selvam Memorial Oration of the Malaysian Society of Gastroenterology in 2006, the Kees Huibregtse Oration of the 15th International Symposium on Pancreaticobiliary Endoscopy (Los Angeles) in 2007, the Sir Francis Avery Jones Professorship in St. Marks (London) in 2008, and the Peter Gilispje oration (Australia) in 2010. He received the Master Endoscopist Award from the ASGE in 2009, the ASGE International Leadership Award in 2011, and was named a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology in 2012. He received the highest award, Master of World Gastroenterology Organization, from the World Gastroenterology Organization in 2014. In 2015, he received an honorary fellowship from the Hong Kong Society of Gastroenterology. He was the secretary general of the World Endoscopy Organization from February 2014 to October 2014, and he is a past president of the World Endoscopy Organization. He received the Padma Bhushan Award from the government of India in 2016 and the 44th Dhanvantari Award from the Dhanvantari Medical Foundation (Mumbai) in 2017.
