Using cross validation, we calculate the HMM-congruence score (which ranges from 0 to 1) for test PBEs. For each event, we also calculate the score of a surrogate chosen using a pooled time-swap shuffle across all test events. The distribution of scores of actual events is significantly higher than that of the surrogate data ($p<0.001$, Mann–Whitney U test).
