A 39 year old woman with premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) received an oocyte donation from an anonymous volunteer donor and had a healthy baby in 2017 (Koichi Kyono, Kyono ART Clinic, Sendai, Japan).
Oocyte donation is regulated by the guidelines of Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology. This oocyte donation program was performed with the cooperation of Oocyte Donation Network (OD‐NET) and Japanese Institution of Standardizing Assisted Reproductive Technology (JISART), based on the guidelines of JISART. The ethical committee of JISART shows the requirements for the approval, as follows; anonymity of the volunteer donor through OD‐NET, no charge, the right of the child to know the identity of the donor on reaching 15 years of age, the recipient being married, and preservation of the record for 80 years etc.
Japan Society for Reproductive Medicine reported the guidelines on assisted reproductive technology using donor gametes in 2009, in which a public organization and legislation by the Japanese Government are needed for mothers’ safety and children’s welfare and rights. There is a number of patients with POI who wish for babies. The appropriate systems and environments are desired to be established in Japan so that such patients can safely have them.
