Rheumatology Update: 2016

Terry L Moore 1,
PMCID: PMC6139955  PMID: 27311220

The Adult Division of Rheumatology at Saint Louis University (SLU) was founded in 1955 by Jack Zuckner, MD, and the Pediatric Division in 1968. Dr. Zuckner stepped down from being Division chiefs in 1983. Since then, over the past 32 years, Terry Moore, MD, has been Division chiefs, and the faculty has grown to six full-time MDs and three PhDs.

The Division has trained more than 60 Rheumatologists who practice in academic and private practice settings all over the world. The Division has received multiple research grants from the National Institutes of Health (K and RO 1 awards) and private organizations for their studies in juvenile idiopathic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and systemic lupus erythematosus. These studies have resulted in more than 200 publications and 225 presentations at international meetings.

The Rheumatology Divisions at SLU are multidisciplinary in nature and see over 9,000 patients a year. The following articles emphasize practical topics in Rheumatology which should provide the primary physician with insight into these common problems.

Dr. Moore’s article provides a summary of how to evaluate a patient with possible autoimmune disease. Katherine Temprano, MD, describes Raynaud’s and its ramifications. Rama Bandlamudi Atluri, MD, shows how to evaluate and treat inflammatory myositidies. Reema Syed, MD, addresses how to evaluate rheumatological causes of the limping child. Peri Hickman Pepmueller, MD, describes how to evaluate overlap and undifferentiated connective tissue diseases. These articles provide a basic approach to many common rheumatological problems a primary care physician may come across.
