WHOLE BODY VIBRATION AS AN ALTERNATIVE FOR EXERCISE - NEW INSIGHTS DERIVED FROM MICE AND MEN

Abstract

During whole body vibration (WBV) the entire body of an individual is exposed to vibrations that are mechanically transferred from a vibrating device such as a platform. It may be an exercise alternative for those not able or willing to participate in exercise programs. Research on humans of different age groups revealed that WBV can improve certain aspects of executive functioning. Underlying brain mechanisms were studied using mice, and made clear that WBV enhances neuronal activity including cholinergic and dopaminergic cell groups. We currently study the potential of WBV in Alzheimer’s disease patients, and noted that in these older adults it a) can be safely applied, and b) seems to improve quality of life if combined with other sensory motor stimulations as an intervention. Cognitive effects could not be improved in Alzheimer’s disease patients, which may suggest that WBV should be applied at an earlier stage of the disease.
