Abstract

Training in capacity assessment is a core competency of the Pikes Peak Training model for Geropsychology (Knight et al., 2009). Based on a needs assessment of in-coming pre-doctoral psychology trainees, the VA Boston Healthcare System created an outpatient capacity training clinic. We will discuss the process of creating the clinic, including training manuals and materials. Process data is presented, including number of referrals since August 2017 (N=35), types of referrals (independent living, medical, financial, or multiple), reasons for cancellation, risk level of the Veterans served (indicated by involvement of protective services), and capacity determinations. This presentation serves as a model for other clinical settings aiming to increase the presence of capacity assessment and provision of training for psychology trainees. Lastly, we provide suggestions for program improvement.
