Abstract

Women face a host of obstacles that jeopardize their economic security in retirement. The most important factor is that women live longer, which means their retirement assets have to last longer and are subject to several longevity risk factors such as inflation. Older women are more likely to have chronic medical conditions, spend more on healthcare costs and need long-term institutional care. Finally, women are often the targeted victims of elder financial fraud and abuse. WISER’s primary area of focus is addressing financial literacy needs and helping women achieve financial capability. This discussion will highlight WISER’s educational programs and strategies that help women avoid mistakes by providing the knowledge, access to tools and resources, and the motivation needed to take action.
