Focus on Special Interest Groups: Physically Challenged Athlete SIG

After the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta, the Paralympic movement gained notice in the United States. Physical therapy trailblazers Dr Kathy Curtis (National Women’s Basketball Association [NWBA] Hall of Fame Inductee) and Dr Robert Gailey (Amputee Running Guru) saw the need for creating a format for physical therapists involved in adaptive sports and founded the disabled athlete special interest group (SIG). Since that time, the focus of the SIG has been renamed the physically challenged athlete SIG and has broadened its scope to include athletes with physical and intellectual impairment.

What is an adaptive sport? Simple: it is any sport or recreational activity where the rules and/or equipment have been adapted to accommodate people with impairments. The physically challenged athlete SIG provides a platform for AASPT members with an interest in adaptive sports to learn and share. Some of goals of the SIG are as follows.

Advocacy

  • To promote inclusive sport and fitness models

  • To promote wellness and fitness for people with physical and intellectual impairment by partnering with organizations such as Special Olympics, Paralympic grassroots/feeder programs, Challenged Athletes Foundation, military adaptive sports programs, and many others

Knowledge

  • To provide physical therapists with programming and resources focused on adaptive sports, including equipment and technology, biomechanics, emergency medical management, and training considerations for athletes with physical and intellectual impairments

  • To facilitate the development of ideas for treatment of and athletic activities for individuals no matter what the disability

Networking (Social Media)

  • To connect physical therapists with other adaptive sports professionals (coaches, officials, recreational therapists, etc), local organizing committees, and adaptive sports programs

  • To provide members with lists of known adaptive sports events and activities across the United States

  • To celebrate and share stories of physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and sports physical therapists who are already involved in adaptive sports

Sports Medicine Licensure Clarity Act Signed Into Law

The Sports Medicine Licensure Clarity Act was signed into law Friday, October 5, 2018, by President Donald Trump. The bill represents a bipartisan solution that protects team physicians, athletic trainers, and other sports medicine professionals when they travel across state lines with their teams to treat the athletes under their care. The passage of this legislation has been a years-long effort involving thousands of AMSSM members and would not have been possible without their collective advocacy efforts. AMSSM also worked over the past several years with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the American Physical Therapy Association, and other health care and sports organizations to gain support for the bill.

AMSSM President Chad Asplund, MD, MPH, testified in support of the bill before the Health Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee in 2015, and said he was proud for this important legislation to become law.
