Dear Editor

we read the publication on “Authors' awareness of concepts in the authorship of scientific publications: Viewpoints of the dental faculty in India” with a great interest.1 Punyani and Deshpande noted that “Our findings suggested significant lacunae regarding the authors' understanding of important basic concepts in scientific writing.”1 We agree that the awareness is very important and the unawareness might result in the improper unethical authorship practice. However, the interesting issue is whether the awareness is actually related to the proper ethical authorship practice. If we analyzed the situation of already existed problematic publications worldwide, several unethical publications are by senior authors, national scientist, professor, vice dean in research affair, dean or chancellor.2 The awareness might be an important factor contributing to the risk of unethical practice. However, the unethical practice is also related to rooted bad manner of the unethical practitioner. To promote awareness is important but a more important session might be the ethical promotion session for the practitioner to upgrade their ethical background.
