Journal of the Korean Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (J Korean Assoc Oral Maxillofac Surg, JKAOMS) is the official journal of the Korean Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. This bimonthly journal offers high-quality original articles, case series studies, case reports, collective or current reviews, technical notes, brief communications or correspondences, and other articles related to regenerative medicine, dentoalveolar surgery, dental implant surgery, head and neck cancer, aesthetic facial surgery/orthognathic surgery, facial injuries, temporomandibular joint disorders, orofacial disease, and oral pathology. JKAOMS is of interest to oral and maxillofacial surgeons and dental practitioners as well as others interested in these fields. JKAOMS was launched in 1975. In 2012, the official language of the journal was changed to English. This journal is indexed in Scopus, Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI), PubMed, PubMed Central, KoreaMed, KoreaMed Synapse, Korea Medical Citation Index (KoMCI), Korean Citation Index (KCI), Crossref, Google Scholar, and others. In Korea, credible international journals are restricted to those listed in Scopus, Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), and Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI).

Numerous journals around the world are applying for inclusion in a representative international index database, but most of them are rejected. One of the current emphasized reasons for rejection is research ethics. The ethics of research publishing should be based on the guidelines of the Committee of Publication Ethics. For more details, please refer to the recently published Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing 3rd edition. For example, to prevent plagiarism, it is necessary to analyze a paper using programs such as Crossref Similarity Check (former Cross-Check), iThenticate, and Copy Killer.

The editorial policy and research ethics of JKAOMS are as follows.

Manuscripts that were already published or are in the process of review in other journals or those having similar contents to other articles published in another journal cannot be submitted to JKAOMS. JKAOMS follows the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals: Writing and Editing for Biomedical Publication (http://www.icmje.org/) and the Good Publication Practice Guidelines for Medical Journals 2nd (https://www.kamje.or.kr).

All studies reporting experiments on human subjects must have followed procedures in accordance with the ethical standards of the responsible committee on human experimentation (institutional and national) and with the Helsinki Declaration. In addition, authors publishing clinical research papers are encouraged to register the study with the Korea Clinical Research Information Service (CRiS; http://cris.nih.go.kr) or other institutes approved by the World Health Organization International Clinical Trial Registry Platform (ICTRP). For policies on research and publication ethics not stated in Instructions to Authors of JKAOMS, international standards for editors and authors (http://publicationethics.org/resources/international-standards-for-editors-and-authors) can be applied. The ethical code in research of JKAOMS is described in detail in the author's guideline of journal submission homepage. JKAOMS is listed in the ESCI and is likely to be automatically listed on the SCIE if it meets the audit criteria. In December 2015, Clarivate Analytics introduced ESCI as a candidate for SCIE/SSCI/A&HCI listing and started indexing in the Web of Science Core Collection. Since ESCI is a candidate SCIE listing, if various evaluation items are satisfied, the probability of such listing is high. In addition, through the Web of Science Core Collection, quoted citations can be researched, and bibliographic information can be calculated easily and accurately.

JKAOMS has 44 years of experience since its first publication in 1975, and the quality of journals has been steadily increasing. Despite the name of the journal including “Korean,” it has succeeded in internationalization by adhering to the character of domestic journals, and the contribution of researchers from all over the world is increasing rapidly. The editors are confident that JKAOMS will soon be listed on the SCIE and become an internationally renowned journal.
