The Divergent Meanings of “I” for the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute and the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing: a Micro-Comic Strip

The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) and the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) are two of the organizations providing guidelines for antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Recommendations from these organizations are often similar; however, there are important differences. Recently, the EUCAST adopted a new definition of “I” for interpreting antimicrobial susceptibility testing results. “I” meant “intermediate” for the EUCAST in the past and continues to mean this for the CLSI. Precise definitions of how these organizations use “I” are in the current edition of the CLSI’s Performance Standards for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (1) and at the EUCAST website (http://www.eucast.org/newsiandr/; accessed 9 January 2019).
