Most HIV proteins were recognized by CD8${}^{+}$ T-cell responses. We calculated the frequency at which HIV proteins were recognized by CD8${}^{+}$ T cells; overall, 50% of responses were directed against Env or Gag (A). $m=8$ CD8${}^{+}$ T cell responses were detected in this cohort of 22 patients at any given time point after infection (B). In B (and other figures in the paper), $\mu$ denotes the average, m is the median, and $\sigma$ is the standard deviation. The distributions are shown for the first 100 days after symptom onset but, overall, distributions changed little over the course of 400 days of infection. Patient SUMA0874 was excluded from the analysis in B due to a lack of measurements of all T-cell responses at all time points.
