I will be transitioning my role as Editor in Chief to Dr Laura Cooley. She is extraordinary and beyond capable of taking the The Journal of Patient Experience (JPE) to new heights. I think she found a new, creative title and role for me, “Editor Emeritus,” which makes me feel like an elderly wizard. Anyway, I’m so proud of the growth of the journal and hold very dear the privilege of serving our readers and contributors over the years. The transition is not about me and my next steps. Yours are the stories that need to be told. Yours are the manuscripts that need to be written. Yours are the voices the world needs to hear.

Thank you for letting me be a part of your collective journey for a little while.

With gratitude,
Gandalf

As I contemplated the invitation to serve as Editor-in-Chief for The Journal of Patient Experience, I encountered a range of emotions: enthusiasm, apprehension, pride, aspiration, commitment…and an overwhelming sense of humility as I imaged myself following in the footsteps of Dr Adrienne Boissy. Her pioneering contributions to the journal, and to the entire field of patient experience, have personally inspired me and I am eager to contribute to the legacy she has established. I am proud to know her as an esteemed colleague and friend, and I will continue to seek her counsel as she transitions into the role of Editor Emeritus.

As pivotal agents of change, we invite you—our readers, authors, reviewers, and editorial board members—to continue with your submissions as the reach of JPE expands and examines innovative ways to impact the field. Please stay tuned for forthcoming JPE developments!

As we advance into 2019, I am delighted to recognize Jennifer Riggs as JPE Managing Editor. We are both deeply committed to the mission of improving experiences for patients, families, and team members. We invite you to connect and to continue submissions as we share ideas and advance academic research to elevate the field of patient experience.

ON THE COVER

Apples to Apples

This is a painting of data.

This is my take on what data can look like when presented in a visual form. I took patient satisfaction survey results and clinical care results and combined them with the allegorical image of a child’s report card.

Regina Holliday is a Maryland-based patient advocate, artist, speaker, and author known for painting a series of murals depicting the need for clarity and transparency in medical records. This advocacy mission was inspired by her late husband Frederick Allen Holliday II and his struggle to get appropriate care. Her artwork became part of the national health-care debate. Regina regularly paints and speaks at medical conferences throughout the world.

She also started the “Walking Gallery” movement, where more than 450 volunteer members wear patient story paintings on the backs of their business suits when they attend health-care conferences. The jackets, which were painted by Holliday or one of 49 artists, depict the story of a patient or an element of medical advocacy. These jacket paintings combined with the tools of social media have spread the word about the importance of the patient’s voice in health-care discussions. She recently wrote a book “The Walking Wall: 73 Cents to the Walking Gallery.” For more info about the Walking Gallery or Regina’s work, please visit http://reginaholliday.blogspot.com/
