In 2017, this journal asked “Medicinal Chemistry: Where are all the Women?”1 It highlighted the fact that, at best, according to multiple metrics, women account for ≤20% of the medicinal chemistry community. Among the suggestions made to improve this disparity was elevating the visibility of excellent women medicinal chemists. We are pleased to announce an initiative to do just that: ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters (ACS MCL) will be publishing a special issue “Women in Medicinal Chemistry” in March 2020, in conjunction with the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.
We have multiple goals for this initiative. One is to highlight and bring attention to the outstanding work that is being done by women in medicinal chemistry, as first authors or as corresponding authors. Another is to encourage women to submit their work for inclusion in this issue. We also urge men in leadership positions to use this opportunity to submit manuscripts where a woman is the first author and to mentor/coach them in this process. Finally, we hope this issue serves as an inspiration to female students, postdoctoral associates, and early career medicinal chemists by showing the breadth and depth of the outstanding medicinal chemistry research currently being pursued and achieved by women.
Specifics for this issue are as follows:
Eligible manuscripts must have a first or corresponding author who is female.
All manuscript types (Letters, Notes, Technology Notes, Innovations, Viewpoints, and Letters to the Editor) will be considered.
All manuscripts will proceed through the standard ACS MCL rigorous review/editorial process.
Submission site open: April 1, 2019.
Submission deadline: October 1, 2019 (revision submission deadline February 1, 2020).
Issue to appear: March 2020.
At any time, accepted papers for the special issue can appear online as Just Accepted Manuscripts and As Soon As Publishable (ASAP). They can then be cited, thereafter, but are scheduled to appear in the March 2020 special issue.
