The state-of-the-art, 65th anniversary thirteenth edition of Williams Textbook of Endocrinology edited by an impressive group of prestigious authors led by Shlomo Melmed offers a high standard guide of fundamental information in endocrine disorders.

This textbook is carefully structured in nine sections which represent a condensed discussion concerning the management of endocrinopathies, the data being obtained from chemical and physiological investigation, genomic studies, as well as clinical trial data.

In the first section, there are several novelties. The new chapter Genetics of Endocrinology Disease briefly describes basic principles of genetics, offering the opportunity for the clinician to understand the wide range of genetic architectures and match them with different endocrine phenotypes. Given that clinicians are increasingly required to understand the inner workings of laboratory medicine, the chapter regarding Laboratory Techniques has been enriched, especially for the academic practitioner, who searches accuracy in test results, human studies and clinical trials.

The following sections exhibit basic science and clinical information regarding well-known endocrine topics like pituitary, thyroid, adrenal or mineral metabolism, with new insights in thyroid autoimmunity, pituitary disorders medical treatment and endocrine hypertension.

Compared to the previous edition, Endocrinology and the Life Span is divided in 3 subunits: the first reviews the impact of pregnancy on the endocrine system and fetal development, the second is focused on childhood and the third approaches adulthood, covering subjects of increasing impact in everyday practice. The current concepts in carbohydrate and fat metabolism disorders are put together in a single section, providing concise and balanced coverage of diagnosis and therapeutic decisions of these rapidly evolving fields.

The book has a very user-friendly format, with plenty of figures, charts, tables and key-points being added at the beginning of every chapter. It also comes as an e-book version that gives the opportunity to browse and find content, view images and share notes and highlights.

Thoroughly revised and updated, this is a true must-have book for every medical specialist, regardless of the specialty, who needs a comprehensive and advanced guide of basic and clinical endocrinology.
