American Cancer Society breaks ground on Gene and Jerry Jones Family Hope Lodge

On May 7, 2019, the American Cancer Society broke ground on a Hope Lodge facility in Dallas, offering cancer patients and their caregivers a home away from home while traveling to receive care from any of North Texas’s premier medical centers. The facility will be named the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Hope Lodge in recognition of their lead gift, which is part of a $25 million campaign. It is located on property donated by Baylor Scott & White Health adjacent to its Baylor University Medical Center campus.

Once the doors are opened in 2021, the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Hope Lodge is expected to provide more than 18,000 nights of free lodging annually. The 40,000-square-foot facility will include 50 private guest suites, each with two beds and a private bathroom. In addition, the facility will feature common living areas, a dining room, laundry facilities, a library, a meditation room, and an outdoor garden. Patients and their caregivers will also have access to the current offerings of the American Cancer Society’s programs and services. The American Cancer Society’s South Region headquarters also will be housed at this location.

The American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge capital campaign, conducted in collaboration with Baylor Scott & White Dallas Foundation, surpassed its fundraising goal with extraordinary support from generous individuals and organizations. As lead donors, the Gene and Jerry Jones Family understand the impact this disease can have within a family and community. Other major donors included the Don and Trudy Steen Charitable Foundation, Carmen and Jeff York, Moody Foundation, The Horner Family, Mabee Foundation, and Susan and Bob Shapard. Nearly $32 million has been raised for this project to date, and the American Cancer Society and Baylor Scott & White Dallas Foundation continue to seek philanthropic support for ongoing operating expenses.

Three Baylor Scott & White Health hospitals recognized among “World’s Best Hospitals 2019” by Newsweek

Three Baylor Scott & White Health hospitals were recently named to Newsweek’s inaugural 2019 list of the World’s Best Hospitals. Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas was ranked number 39 in the United States and Baylor Scott & White Medical Center–Temple ranked number 131. Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital–Plano was recognized as a top specialty hospital, one of 24 specialty hospitals included. In all, 250 American hospitals made the list.

The weekly magazine compiled its inaugural list to recognize the hospitals “shaping the future of medicine.” Hospitals were ranked based on three factors: key patient safety metrics and quality data, patient experience surveys, and peer recommendations.

“We are honored to have our hospitals recognized for the quality care delivered to our patients,” said Jim Hinton, CEO of Baylor Scott & White Health. “This recognition speaks to the dedication of team members throughout our system who work each and every day to provide safe, quality, high-value, affordable care with an exceptional experience.”

Baylor Scott & White Medical Center–Temple celebrates completion of the Grobowsky Surgical Center

Baylor Scott & White Medical Center–Temple celebrated the opening of its new Grobowsky Surgical Center. The three-story, 147,000-square-foot surgical center expands the hospital’s advanced surgical capabilities for patients undergoing procedures in Central Texas with several features:

  • A new, convenient entrance for surgery patients and their loved ones

  • 10 additional, larger surgical suites

  • 48 new, private day surgery rooms

  • A new, 54-bed postanesthesia care unit

  • A new waiting area

  • High-tech instrument processing to support advanced procedures.

“We have an uncompromising, strong commitment to patient safety and quality care, and this new surgical center is an investment in this commitment,” said Harry Papaconstantinou, MD, chair for the Department of Surgery at Baylor Scott & White–Temple. “Additionally, the new facility will give us an opportunity to modernize our existing operating room suites.”

First-in-Texas remote prescription pickup option now available

Baylor Scott & White Health now offers a new, more convenient prescription pickup option for patients. Baylor Scott & White Pharmacy kiosks, which are located on medical centers throughout the health care system’s service area, are now being installed offsite to make filling prescriptions easier for more patients.

The kiosks offer several advantages for consumers: all prescriptions can be filled; prescriptions are available at the kiosk within hours of pharmacy receipt and can be picked up 24 hours a day; pharmacist consultations are available via phone or video 24 hours a day; and the kiosks are able to maintain the medications’ efficacy during storage.

Philanthropy Notes

Giving with grateful hearts

For the Gupta family, a successful life is one filled with balance. Family, spirituality, personal health, and community are all important to Satish and Yasmin Gupta, who are successful entrepreneurs as founders and owners of SB International Inc., a manufacturer and global distributor of specialized steel products for the energy sector. Satish and Yasmin are also first-generation immigrants who came to this country for education and stayed because they felt that they had found the community where they could raise their family and grow their business.

Now, through a transformational gift made to the Baylor Scott & White Dallas Foundation, the new Satish and Yasmin Gupta Heart Center at Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital–Plano is enabled in its mission to help improve the lives of people in their Texas community and around the world through education, research, and training. “We are involved with The Heart Hospital because of the tremendous growth and success displayed over the last 10 years. The education and research taking place there is notable. It has made the hospital a well-known entity throughout the country. So, we are hoping that with the help we are able to provide, it can support the next level of innovative technology, awareness, and global initiatives,” Satish explained.

Their commitment is a very personal one: Satish’s and Yasmin’s fathers both needed life-saving heart bypass procedures in the early 1980s, a time when coronary bypass surgery was not available in India. The young couple worked hard for the resources needed to bring their fathers from India to Texas for treatments that ultimately saved their lives. In 2003, Satish became aware of his own cardiac symptoms and, working with physicians at Baylor Scott & White Health, began to take a proactive approach to his own health that he continues diligently to this day.

The Gupta family sees this gift as an opportunity for a partnership with a leading health care institution to positively impact lives around the world. In addition to research and education that will benefit patients here, the funds will allow physicians from other countries to observe the advanced care provided here in Texas and then take that knowledge home to help those in need in their own countries. It is an investment in health, Satish and Yasmin said, that impacts people locally while also helping people globally.

“We consider it a partnership with sustainability,” Satish explained. “The knowledge gained and shared through research and education will live well beyond all of us.”

Foundation thanks advisors and honors their stories

Philanthropic investments in Baylor Scott & White Health help propel programs that give more patients access to promising treatments, bring comfort where needed, and save lives in our community. They are why Baylor Scott & White Health Dallas Foundation celebrates the transformational gifts of charitable donors and the professional advisors who help make this possible.

This spring, the Philanthropic Leadership Awards Dinner honored the generosity of donors Carmen and Jeff York and their financial advisors, Brian Cloud and Joe Nolan (RGT Advisors); tax advisor, Kelly Gillette (Armanino, LLP); and legal advisor, Val Cronin (Underwood Perkins).

Diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2015, Jeff was given less than 2 years to live but was determined to beat the odds. After researching his options, Jeff came to Baylor Scott & White Health for his care and was successfully treated. During this process, Jeff recognized that not everyone had the means or lived close enough to life-saving cancer treatments. Grateful for his care, he began looking for a way to give back and learned about plans to build a Hope Lodge in Dallas.

“Jeff was clear that what had been done for him at Baylor had changed his life,” Brian said. “From a charitable perspective, it was obvious to me what his passion was as he sought to optimize how he takes care of his family and impacts the causes that are important to him. As a financial advisor, it is a joy and privilege to help steward people like Jeff.”

During the dinner, Jeff shared how Kelly Gillette introduced him to Cynthia Krause, a vice president at the Foundation. He explained how his team of advisors collaborated in structuring and executing a complex gift of $4.7 million for Hope Lodge.

“Everyone played a part,” said Joe. “It was a great team effort by and between Val, Kelly, Cynthia, Brian, and me. It all came together smoothly.”
