Unfortunately, subsequent to the author checking the proofs of this article, an error was introduced into Fig. 1 during production, such that the order of the colour palettes relating to each individual was incorrect. Specifically, the palettes for individuals a and d were interchanged, as were the palettes for individuals b and c. The Editorial Office apologises for this error. The article has now been updated and the correct version of the figure is included in the online PDF and HTML versions of the article (http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00125-017-4210-x).
