The Pediatric Pharmacy Association (PPA) is saddened to learn of the passing of Jeffrey L. Blumer, PhD, MD, FCP. Dr. Blumer received his BS from Pennsylvania State University, his PhD in Pharmacology at Northwestern University and his MD at Case Western Reserve University. He had a long outstanding academic career and was a recipient of numerous awards and honors. For many years he was the Chief of the Division of Pediatric Pharmacology and Critical Care at Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital, and a Professor of Pediatrics and Pharmacology, School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, where he distinguished himself as a clinician scientist, mentor and educator with his focus on applied clinical pediatric pharmacology. Dr. Blumer was a pioneer in the design, implementation and completion of numerous clinical trials of new and existing medications. He defined their benefits for sick infants and children and was responsible for defining optimal doses for multiple unique drug classes across the age continuum. He was also instrumental in helping to move many legislative efforts forward that addressed the obsticles confronted by the “therapeutic orphan,” solidifying the importance of critical clinical study of drugs with potential in pediatric therapeutics. Without question, he had a significant impact on the health of critically ill infants and children and enabled those of us who aspired to do the same to be better practitioners and scientists. Dr. Blumer was a member of The Journal of Pediatric Pharmacology and Therapeutics (JPPT) Editorial Board.
