Abstract
The history and development of Ontario’s new public health agency, Public Health Ontario, is explored. The governance model and organizational structure are identified along with an overview of the relationship with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. The strategic mission and vision are described as are the key functions. The building of the organization through new investments and divestments is explained. The paper concludes with an overview of the challenges encountered and the opportunities ahead.

Résumé
Nous explorons l’histoire et le développement de Santé publique Ontario, le nouvel organisme de santé publique ontarien. Nous exposons son modèle de gouvernance et sa structure organisationnelle et donnons un aperçu de ses liens avec le ministère de la Santé et des Soins de longue durée de l’Ontario. Nous décrivons sa mission stratégique et sa vision, ainsi que ses fonctions clés. Nous expliquons les nouveaux investissements et les dessaisissements qui ont permis de construire l’organisme. L’article se termine par un aperçu des difficultés rencontrées et des possibilités à l’horizon.
