A Cross-sectional Study of Stretched Penile Length in Boys from West Bengal, India

Mahmood Dhahir Al-Mendalawi 1,
PMCID: PMC6987778  PMID: 32042702

Dear sir,

I read with interest the study by Roy et al.[1] published in July–August 2019 issue of the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism. The authors established normative data for stretched penile length (SPL) in neonate and children aged 1–13 years from West Bengal, India. I assume that the utility of the constructed data in the clinical fields and researches institutions ought to be cautiously considered. The authors addressed one limitation in terms of the cross-sectional nature of the study. I presume that the following methodological limitation might be additionally relevant. Interestingly, various studies obviously pointed out to the ethnic diversity of penile dimensions.[2,3,4] India, to my knowledge, is a multiethnic country. The authors regrettably did not state the ethnic backgrounds of the studied cohort. Despite the study limitations, the constructed reference values of SPL help assess puberty in boys and prevent misdiagnosis of micropenis and related genital disorders.
