Abstract
Ahlstrom-Munksjö has increased the production of face mask materials at its plants in Turin, Italy and Tampere, Finland in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
In March, Ahlstrom-Munksjö expanded the production of face mask materials at its Turin plant to a fine fiber line normally used for industrial filtration materials. The initial target was to produce material for more than 20 million face masks per month.
Since then, through line improvements and production optimization, Ahlstrom-Munksjö has further expanded its capacity in Turin to meet strong demand for high performance filtration media for surgical face masks in Italy. The Turin plant is now planning to produce material for more than 60 million surgical face masks per month. This will add up to a total of 500 million face masks for the remainder of 2020.
“I am extremely proud of the work that the team is doing; in only a few months, by collaborating with partners in the region, we have developed a range of high performance filtration media for surgical face masks and established a sizeable and reliable supplier to the local market, helping the Covid-19 fight in Italy,” said Giuseppe Costa, vice president Filtration EMEA and Asia at Ahlstrom-Munksjö.
At its Tampere plant, Ahlstrom-Munksjö is also expanding the production of face mask materials to a line normally used for industrial filtration materials. The Tampere plant can deliver fabric for around 10 million face masks per month on short notice.
Ahlstrom-Munksjö says that it continues to explore all options to further expand its production capacity to meet growing demand for protection materials globally.
