Dominik Meyer: A Tribute

PMCID: PMC7263135

Inline graphic We are sad to report that Dominik Meyer, an OJSM founding Editorial Board member, passed away on December 15, 2019, at the age of 49. Dr. Meyer was Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Zurich and former Head of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at Balgrist University Hospital.

Prof. Meyer was internationally renowned for his research and clinical expertise in shoulder surgery. His numerous publications included many important studies of the pathology and treatment of rotator cuff tears. We have been fortunate to have published 10 of his works in AJSM and OJSM.

Domink Meyer was, above all, a kind and caring person who was beloved by his friends and colleagues. One of his fellows, Guilherme Carpeggiani, was inspired to write the following tribute to his mentor:

“He was an altruistic researcher who always involved his students into his ideas and projects, a real model to be followed. During my period in Zurich, he had a fast-paced worsening of a silent degenerative disease diagnosed several years before. It was Prof. Gerber’s last year as dean of orthopedics. Dominik was his natural successor. His words to me were that this transition required way too much energy. A train that once departed, could never get back. Yet, Professor Meyer had a special way of bringing balance into the shoulder department as a formidable counterpart who knew how to swivel the serious mood into a fun and respectable environment. Many of his students had similar experiences the way I did, and despite different stories, the recipe was always the same.

Dominik Christoph Meyer had all the titles Prof., Dr. Med., MD…but above all, the one that counted the most was FRIEND!

Farewell professor, it’s not goodbye but we’ll all miss you until we meet again.

Your daily teaching will live forever in our patient care.”
